area to shop for gifts. Handicrafts, silk, silver, textiles
and artwork are timeless souvenirs from all over the world.
Many imitation branded goods flood the market and there
are plenty of places to eat and drink too.

Ban
Taway
Situated
on the Hang Dong Rd., it is such a popular location
for hand carving, antiques and reproductions. Ban Taway
is a major centre of furniture manufacture, using notable
woods and materials including teak, rosewood and rattan.
They are artfully carved in traditional or contemporary
designs. Woodcarving is a traditional northern Thai
art.

This
world-famous village is located along a road lined with
handicraft-producing factories, where villagers have been
engaged in their manufacture for at least 200 years. A
major advantage of shopping at Bor Sang, San Kamphaeng

in several outlying villages. |
Cotton-
and Silk Weaving Village
This
is also a famous village located on San Kamphaeng Rd. The
village is the major source of all Thai silk & cotton.

Doi
Suthep
A
visit to Chiang Mai would not be complete if you miss
the chance to visit Doi Suthep. The golden centre chedi
on the hilltop is one of the holiest in Thailand, housing
holy Buddha relics. From the top, you have an amazing
view of Chiang Mai city. Doi Suthep is the most visited
attraction in the northern capital. You can reach the
top either by climbing the steep stairway, all 290 steps,
or by taking the funicular railway. Doi Suthep attracts
Buddhist pilgrims from all over the world.

Inthanon
When
the weather in the city is hot, this mountain park is
cool. Doi Inthanon is Thailand's tallest mountain, which
is also a major national park with plenty of opportunities
for trekking in the wilderness of Thailand's forest-covered
mountains. Pleasure is provided by beautiful waterfalls,
diverse wildlife, wild orchids, hill-tribe settlements
and visitor facilities.

Songkran
Festival
It
falls on about the 13th April, when the sun moves into
Aries. Songkran festival is the water-throwing fun festival
during the Thai New Year, in which everyone is liable
to get thoroughly drenched in the hottest season of
the year. People arm themselves with a water pistol
and enjoy this unique and utterly fun traditional event,
which has been carried out for a very long time.

It
falls on the full moon of the 12th lunar month (November).
It's a kind of thanksgiving for the "River Goddess"
for providing water to those people living. This festival
is celebrated nationwide and is particularly delightful
in Sukhothai, Chiang Mai and Ayutthaya. |

Umbrella
Festival
This
festival is held in the Bor Sang village, where hundreds
of pretty local girls hold beautiful umbrellas in a
colourful parade. The main street celebrates their traditional
skills and features contests, exhibitions, stalls selling
umbrellas and other handicrafts.

Village Wood-Carving Fair
This
fair features demonstrations, contents and sales of wood carvings
and local handicrafts including local folk performances with
a highlight on popular northern Thai wood carfts.

on the first weekend of Febuary. It features a parade
